Common reasons for lower back pain
Lower back pain is the bane of many people’s lives and as a clinic hosting one of the best chiropractors and physiotherapists in Dubai, one of the most common conditions we see in patients is just that. It may be a standalone symptom, or it may be part of an overall condition that the patient is experiencing. Lower back pain either chronic or acute can sometimes affect lives to the point where everyday tasks become unbearable at times. As a chiropractic clinic, it’s our job (and passion) to get to the bottom of what’s causing it, and applying a bespoke treatment plan that will work to help manage it effectively.
What are the causes of lower back pain?
Lower back pain can be caused by a variety of things, including muscle or ligament strain, herniated or ruptured disks, osteoarthritis, sciatica, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, scoliosis, infection or tumors, and even poor posture or obesity. Below is my take on the top three.
Firstly, one of the most common causes of lower back pain is a herniated or ‘slipped’ disc. Whilst usually found in active people who play sports, it’s a very common condition that can affect anyone, at any age. As we get older, it’s common that people will experience some form of a disc issue, which is usually a natural part of aging. Herniated discs can press on a nerve and cause anything from mild discomfort, to excruciating pain, as well as numbness in the legs.
Poor posture can cause lower back pain by placing added stress on the muscles, ligaments and joints in the lower back. When the spine is not properly aligned, the natural curvature of the lower back is altered, which can put added pressure on the discs and nerves in the lower back. Additionally, poor posture can lead to muscle imbalances and weakness in the core, which can make it more difficult for the muscles in the lower back to support the spine. Over time, this can lead to pain and discomfort. Improving posture through exercises and stretching can help to alleviate lower back pain by reducing the stress on the lower back and promoting proper spinal alignment.
Lifting weights can also cause lower back pain. The truth is, your lower back is a delicate area and it’s important to take care of it while lifting. When you lift an object, your lower back muscles and joints work hard to support us. If you’re not using the right technique, such as keeping our back straight and using your legs to lift, you put a lot of strain on these muscles and joints.
